  • Supplies and Resources for Immigrant Students' Mental Health and Well-Being

    Funded Sep 26, 2024

Thank you again for your generous donation! Your donation has contributed to a successful afterschool space for my students who are English Language Learners. Twice per week, I have created a space for my students to come do their homework or practice English. Students in this space have formed a strong sense of community of those still learning English and coming together to engage in learning at Homework Help (afterschool tutoring) or Dream Team (a school club for undocumented and immigrant youth). The snacks in this project are provided to students during afterschool hours as they engage in these activities.”

  • Supplies for Students to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

    Funded Oct 2, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation to my project! On October 19th, our school hosted an Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, inviting students, families, and all members of the Sunset Park community to come together to celebrate hispanic cultures and heritage. Your donation to my project helped make this event successful. We were able to provide food, snacks, activities, games, and a photo booth for guests at the event. The event also included performances by students and community members. Overall, the event was a success, and we saw many members of our community come together to honor and celebrate their heritage. Thank you for providing us with the supplies and resources we needed to make this an engaging and fun event.

It is celebrations and events likes these that our school values and finds important in celebrating those who are a part of our community!”

  • Supplies for English Language Learners' Afterschool Activities and Studies

    Funded Sep 19, 2024

The snacks in this project are provided to students during afterschool hours as they engage in these activities.

Additionally, many of our students require a laptop for their assignments, but our school isn't able to provide a device for all students to take home. The laptop in this project is borrowed by students on an as-needed basis, whether they want to work on an assignment after school or take the laptop home. In a school that has limited devices for students, a donation of a laptop goes a long way and has helped many students already.”

  • Resources and Supplies for English Language Learners

    Funded Feb 23, 2024

Thank you again for your support in funding my project!

This year I have created an after-school space for English Language Learners to stay after school for up to 2.5 hours per week to practice their English language skills and/or have a space to do their homework and receive tutoring. The snacks in this project are provided to students to enjoy while they are learning after school hours. The electronic devices are made available to the students to use for English practice or for their school assignments that require Internet or online submissions. We use the flash cards and English games in this project to help beginner-level students recognize and learn sight words and create basic sentences.

Students who are English Language Learners are not required to stay in this after-school space, but many of them choose to do so. They are eager and dedicated to improving their English language skills quickly as they adapt to life in their new community and school. Students who stay after school in this space look forward to doing so each week and are at different English proficiency levels. My favorite thing about this space is seeing our students help each other learn English as well as advocating for themselves when they need help from me.

Thank you again for your generosity and support! The supplies and resources made available to my students in this space wouldn't be possible without you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chin

  • Books in Spanish for Beginner English Language Learners

    Funded Nov 19, 2023

Thank you again for your generous donation to my project supporting English Language Learners!

The Spanish edition of the two books included in this project, Diary of A Young Girl and Maus, are a part of our World War II unit for English Language Arts. Students are given a choice of 8-10 World War II novels to read in small groups. The novels are intended to give students various perspectives of World War II. Students are asked to read the novel out loud in small groups and will complete various writing activities throughout this unit.

The books in this project that you have helped to fund will be for Spanish-speaking English Language Learners. In some classes, English Language Learners make up the majority of the class so these additional resources for our ELLs are crucial to their learning and development of their English language skills. Small groups are created with some English Language Learners and some bilingual students to support language development. Together, they will read and complete writing activities and projects to further support comprehension and language development.

Thank you for supporting my project!”
