The Key to Long Term Passion for Reading!

Our students have been delving into the books we have received thanks to your generosity! During our reading workshop, students had the freedom to explore our new books. Students connected to the stories and many saw themselves reflected by the characters. The central message, themes and gender were some of the interests students expressed when reading these books. Many of my students took the books home and shared them with their parents or loved one.
Our reading workshop period consists of students reading independently after my mini lesson. Students can pick a spot with their partner or sit on their designated seat. Students have the option of choosing high interest books from a basket,reading from their book baggies or digital resources provided by our school.
All my students have expressed the appreciation for learning about other cultures that resonate with theirs. Speaking about how they too share the same passions and interests as the characters. This project truly gave my students the opportunity to read their books through the lens of mirrors and windows.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Allstate Foundation and 5 other donors.

My students will have access to these books in the classroom as well as to share their passion for learning with their loved ones at home. Our borrowing library is open for students to freely feel they are entitled to love reading and if they wish to read the book several times, then our mission is serving its purpose. Feeling connected to linguistically and culturally diverse books promotes, metalinguistic awareness and pride in our bilingual learners. I would never want to rob them the opportunity to embrace a book they love if they wish to take it home. As their teacher I will use these texts as mentor texts for books they can be inspired to mimic, as authors pull their interests as readers. In addition, I hope to inspire their reading fluency and comprehension by dramatizing the voices of the characters in these books which are mirrors to their lives. I hope to promote vocabulary expansion as they learn new words. This is my mission.
