My students love to watch me draw and learn greatly from my demonstrations. Repeating and practicing drawing and other techniques teaches students not only how to do certain art techniques but also that it is okay to mess up. Every time I redraw something or they see me erase something, they are learning that practice makes perfect, mistakes happen, and that it is important to keep trying and never give up. Demonstrations are key not only for encouraging understanding in the art room, but also for our social-emotional learning. In my room, I currently draw demonstrations on the whiteboard, however not all students can always see the board which is frustrating for both me and the students. When we move to other mediums, I will not be able to simply draw on the board to demonstrate. With the COVID-19 virus, I am unable to have students gather around me at a table for demonstrations. A document camera would be a great way to keep everyone socially distanced and allow all of my students to see demonstrations from anywhere in the room. Again, with social distancing and current protocols, I refrain from having students get up to get their own supplies. Cafeteria trays would be an incredible help in distributing materials quickly and easily to each student. I can also disinfect them easily between students. These would be especially helpful once we get to painting, and help contain messes too!
