Why do kids love to swing? First, swinging is fun and it releases dopamine which is a feel-good hormone. More importantly, swinging helps them make sense of their environment, provides proprioceptive feedback, visual stimulus, and tactile input from the actual swing. The addition of a 360 Indoor Hammock Swing with safety mats to our sensory room would create a safe, calming experience for students in our building. Since swings engage the mind and body and provide vestibular stimulation it is an easy way for students to receive the sensory input they require to help them be successful in the academic classroom. Additionally, swinging can be a great way to break up the day and provide a calming way to shake the sillies out in a healthy way. Even before actually swinging, students may develop increased hand-eye coordination just getting into a swing and better task planning. Making a swing move encourages motor control and engages core muscles. Overall, swinging is a positive, simple way to improve the academic experience.
