Help Combat Period Poverty
Funded Nov 27, 2023Thank you so very much for your generosity in contributing to this very necessary cause. An overwhelming number of our upper elementary girls are getting their periods and they do not always have the supplies they need to be clean and comfortable. Many of our girls are getting their periods for the first time, in school, and are caught unaware and unprepared. The Menstruation Station that you helped fund has been pivotal in fighting period poverty. here at PS 59.
I believe that access to hygiene products is a basic right and I strive to provide my students with, not just materials, but also knowledge. The girls are very excited to visit the station, when needed, and eagerly bring friends that they know are in need. The especially love the little baggies that they can put their products in, so they can be discrete, and the handwipes, as the bathroom does not always have hand soap. We look forward to continuing this project for years to come!”

Empowering Instructional Tools for Striving Readers
Funded Feb 7, 2023Thank you so much for your generous donation to our very worthy cause! Our empowering learning materials came very quickly and, from the very beginning, my students were so excited about using them.
We have a small learning space, so we use the individual-sized schedule so that everyone knows the plan for the day from the very start of our lesson. The schedule has really helped my students stay focused and prepared for each part of our daily lessons.
We use the highlighters and pencils daily. They allow my students to choose between different mediums to code words for reading. They love having a variety of tools to choose from and the ability to make the best choice for them.
Despite their struggles, my students are learning to be independent learners and the materials you've helped provide is just one step towards that."”

This classroom project was brought to life by #TeachHealthy with Nature Made.Leveled Texts for Struggling Readers
Funded Jan 6, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donations! Your generosity is helping to support upper elementary students with learning foundational reading skills. The pandemic and remote learning has resulted in many of our upper grade students reading at levels several grade levels below standards. Many of our upper grade teachers do not have materials that match the needs of these students. These new books are not only supplementing the instruction that I give in small groups, but are also helping to supplement the instruction in the students' classrooms. Our students LOVE new books (who doesn't?!) and are happy to have accessible reading materials.
The texts that your donations have helped to fund are used by students for independent reading, as well as for small group and one-on-one instruction. Our students are using these texts to apply learning we've done in our small groups, like using early reading behaviors (one-to-one match, etc), decoding, and sight word recognition in context.”

Materials to Support Ambitious Readers
Funded Sep 23, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donations! In the past, the students in my groups completed worksheets as independent practice. Now, they have new, engaging, decodable texts to read! The decodable texts allow my students to practice the skills we are learning in our groups, in texts.
Many students want to stay in my room longer to read these books. These are students that usually say, "I don't like reading". It wonderful to see them feeling successful in an area where they struggle.
We all are so grateful to you!!”
