The 10,000 minute challenge is my effort to ignite a love of reading in my students. Many of my students detest reading and as an avid reader (and an English teacher!) it breaks my heart when I think of all the amazing stories they are missing out on simply because they think they don't like to read. My goal is to make reading fun again--that means no grades, no penalties, just reading, and some fun prizes too. These materials will serve as incentives for students to honorably and accurately log the minutes that they read. Every week I do a Reading Recognition in my classes and students get candy and other fun things depending on what milestones in their reading journey they have hit. I want to be able to give my students immediate, positive reinforcement for choosing to pick up a book and just read. My students will receive these prizes for accomplishing goals along the way to reading 10,000 minutes. This challenge is taking course over the entirety of the school year, so I need lots of incentives at the ready to motivate them to keep reading! My goal for my students is to feel excited by reading. By reading more, this will increase students' comfortability with reading and therefore increase the difficulty of texts that they are able to comprehend and think on.
