Having a variety of sensory and fine motor experiences is so important for young children -- especially those with special needs. I am requesting a weighted blanket, fiber optic lights, and activities with magnets. With these materials, my students will have the opportunity to explore different lights, textures, and weight, as well as improve their fine motor and visual motor skills. Students with special needs often struggle to regulate sensory input and can be resistant to new sensory experiences which makes accessing new fine motor and visual motor activities challenging. Having a variety of sensory materials available to them will give them the opportunity to explore in a safe and non-stressful environment. They will have the ability to access sensory stimulating materials as well as the freedom to wind down with calming materials when they become over-stimulated. With the ability to regulate their sensory needs, they will be able to practice and improve their fine motor and visual motor skills with fun activities. The tactile circles will allow the children to touch unusual textures that they are not used to. The weighted blanket and the body pod will give them sensory input when they are struggling and help to calm and comfort them. Having shades on the classroom lights will filter the brightness and create a calming atmosphere. The various activity boards will give students the opportunity to use different types of latches and use problem-solving and visual motor skills to move magnets through a maze all while practicing their colors and numbers by sorting magnets into different groups. These foundational skills give my students the tools they need to be successful as they learn and grow.
