  • Lego Build Joyful Mathematicians

    Funded Sep 21, 2022

Throughout the semester students began to feel more and more comfortable with me and reflective in knowing when they were high in stress and anxiety. The reason they were able to develop these self reflective skills is due to access of the fidgets and stress balls. Students have begun to feel more comfortable in the classroom as a result and understand coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety to help them when it is time for tests. The students were also able to engage in challenging memory games with the use of the legos when trying to copy designs by memory. This has helped with creating more joy factor activities for the students. The most popular item that students constantly ask me for are the stress balls which they get the most excited for. I have one student who asks me for them every time they come into class because they find math to be a stressful subject for them due to it being a challenge for them. With the stress ball they have been able to get more work done in class because that stress is no longer on the forefront of their mind, preventing them from being able to concentrate. Thank you again for your donations and providing students with these much needed resources. Next semester I plan to implement more activities with Legos which will continue to challenge their memory and ability to interpret instructions.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Orosco

  • Developing Mathematicians

    Funded Nov 7, 2021

Thank you so much for the resources! The social emotional wellbeing of my students was taking its toll at first but once I shared the fidgets with them, a lot of them started to learn and understand how it helps them concentrate. I was able to establish a wellness corner for students to be able to relax and breath to help them refocus, which has helped several of my students with grounding themselves when stressed during finals. Some students lacked notebooks so I was able to create makeshift notebooks for them using the graph paper, stapler, and construction paper. They have also loved the meme stickers. My favorite part has been finding a meme to match their personality and seeing their smiles from the meme stickers.

When we received the chess boards, the students were pumped up and immediately wanted to play. A favorite moment of mine was hearing one of the students who disliked chess club at first because we could only play online then stated that ever since they learned to play on the board, they have not lost a game to anyone.

Again, I appreciate the donation and support you all provided for the students and I am looking forward to creating and playing math board games with them using the materials provided and games we received.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Orosco

There are three main categories of items in which I am requesting. One section for closing mathematical gaps, one section for strategies with reducing stress, anxiety and providing guidance on handling life problems, and another for providing materials to be better organized and structured for the students. According to standardized tests and MAPS data, many students are still at a 3rd grade level in math. With this gap in mind, students often struggle with catching up with the many of their peers which further widens that gap. I am hoping to close that gap with the math games I requested. In Nevada, we are the 51st in mental health and it shows in the classroom. I hope to provide the chess board to teach students critical thinking skills for thinking through consequences for actions they choose. Through reading the books requested I hope to use those to provide breaks from math and guidance on life choices. I also hope to use the tapestry, stress toys, and aromatherapy to provide students with strategies to help them focus on their mental health. Lastly, the rest of the resources will be used to help me with organizing the materials provided and providing students with the ability to make their own notebooks for writing notes.
