I teach Math to 40 really incredible 5th graders. They are energetic, inquisitive, funny, and kind. They love to learn - and unbelievably, most of them would say Math is their favorite subject. Believe it or not, kids don't innately hate math. What they hate is feeling frustrated, confused, or lost. Adding the element of fun to anything makes it better - and I have found this to be especially true with math. With hands-on materials, such as the spinners, oversized playing cards, and magnetic manipulatives, like the fraction tiles and the coordinate plane, as well as math games, like Proof, Left/Center/Right, Target, Match Madness, and Adsumudi. I can continue to bring this element to my classroom and instill a love of mathematical learning in my students.
