  • Standing for Students

    Funded Aug 12, 2023

Thank you so much for your donation! My students will be able to learn in an environment that suits their individual needs due to this funding. I sincerely appreciate your generosity for this project. It will help many children for years to come at Laverne Schools. Thank you again for your help.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McGuire

  • Choice Reading for All

    Funded Nov 2, 2022

Thank you so much for your donation! My students are enjoying the books available for their choice reading time. I was able to choose from a wide variety of genres and reading levels to be better able to meet all of my readers' needs. They are growing as readers, as well as becoming more empathetic, open to learning, and interested in other cultures, beliefs, and ideals. In addition, they are finding out more about themselves and what they are capable of doing.

I believe the most valuable tool we can give our students is the ability to think for themselves. These choice reading books provide the opportunity for them to do just that, and I thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McGuire

  • Lighting Up Minds With Literature Circles

    Funded Feb 7, 2022

Thank you so much for sponsoring the materials needed to implement literature circles in the classroom. With the money from this project, my sophomores have been participating in dystopian literature circles and taking a deep-dive into the dystopian genre. They were allowed to choose between a handful of novels ("The Hunger Games," "Ready Player One," "Unwind," "Uglies," and "Legend"), and were placed in groups of no more than four. In these groups, they read and discuss the characters, plot, theme, and symbols.

As a larger group, we have learned about and discussed features of the dystopian genre, including dystopian protagonists, fear, aesthetics, themes, and setting, and they are able to apply this information to their specific novel. The conversations they have at a small group and whole class level have been interesting and thought-provoking. On a daily basis, they are given time to read, discuss, make notes, and create mini-projects.

Next year, I will use the memoir titles in a similar fashion with seniors. I can't wait to hear the discussions they will have about the titles that were purchased with these funds. It truly is a gift to be able to incorporate engaging and up-to-date texts in the classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McGuire

The requested books will be used for literature circles for sophomores and seniors. Literature circles promote cooperative learning because students rely on each other to comprehend the text and questions raised during reading. They also allow students to claim ownership over their learning, which leads to deeper engagement and increased decision-making. Literature circles are great options during the pandemic when school so often has to go virtual, because it's much easier to facilitate discussion on Zoom with groups of three to four rather than the whole class. Finally, literature circles are often more fun than whole class novels, because they offer more opportunity for debate and discussion. Sophomores will be able to choose between several novels in a dystopian literature unit, and seniors will have the option to choose between five autobiographies in a memoir unit. They will be placed in small groups of 3-5 students and will, for the most part, be able to read at their own pace. This is ideal for these unprecedented pandemic times when students are so often quarantined- even if they are at home, they will still be able to participate and keep up with their literature circles. Reading will be done both in class and at home, but most of class time will be reserved for reflective discussion and debate. Students will also create mini-projects together in their group, and each member will have a role they are responsible for (keep the rest of the group on task, lead group discussion, record questions, find quotes, etc.). The chairs were requested to provide flexible seating when participating in literature circles, and the white board will be used for jotting down group discussion, questions, and quotes.
