My students are in the 9th grade in Florida, and range in levels from the lowest-of-the-low to the best-of-the-best. My students go to a Title I school which means a majority of them are on free or reduced lunch. Every week they are asked to bring in a book from home or from the library and I cannot tell you how many times a student of mine has told me that they do not own a single book. I've even had kids bring in phone books in order to receive the extra credit.
My students are the ones helping to put their food on the table for their family, while trying to get an education and enjoy life. My students are the kids on the basketball, football, track and swim team. My students are involved in the arts and who are trying to just get by.
My students are the ones who need to take responsibility for their own learning through Literature Circles.
