Funded May 7, 2024Many of our students do not have access to any of the technology that we use in our school and my class specifically. Teaching in a school that doesn't have access to technology and other resources that are becoming pivotal part of the world that we live in is a challenge at times. Some of those challenges that are out of our hands can be very humbling in my own experiences with the technology that I have been fortunate to be exposed to and use in my own education experience. Students in my school or very excited about the opportunities that our donors are being able to provide to our students. The opportunities are so new and exciting that it opens so many doors for discussions and possibilities the students are now being able to experience in their own education. Teaching with different technology resources has exposed opportunities for students for the first time. When you see a student that holds or is able to use for the first time is that ah-ha moment that every teacher talks about in their "Why". Students are being able to engage with new possibilities that they didn't even know were possible. Even though we only get to scratch the surface to what is possible, it is the bridge that the students are being able to cross to what is possible for the world of technology and education that we live in today.
With the recent tablets and Sphero robots added to our classroom, the students have been able to learn and expand their knowledge about a different way that technology can be used in the world. The new products have added so much exciting and engaging experiences that they students cant wait to come to class and get their hands on. The students have found being able to control a robot remotely from another device has been the most exciting part of the materials that have been donated from our amazing donors. With the Sphero robots, the students have been able to put their controlling skills to the test through obstacle course and races. They students will get practice driving where they get to spend some time getting familiar with the controls of their robots before they compete against their other classmates and even myself for class prizes or bragging rights for the day.
Some of my students are experienced with tablets at home for different personal uses. The materials that we have been provided have opened up a whole new set of doors of activities for the students to engage with. I have students that have experience with other apps that they play on the tablets. Even with the experiences that they already have, those students are still engaging in new or different ways with the Sphero robots in class. I had one student tell me that its almost like one of the games he plays on his personal device, but a real life game that they are controlling outside of the screen. I feel like the opportunities that are being provided with these materials are allowing the students to engage in technology in either a very new way or a very different way which is reaching to every student that comes into my classroom.”
With gratitude,
