This year, my international students are partnering with a documentary film company to create a visual story about the connection between work and the American Dream. We have the opportunity to film our work in school, but we also want students to also take some equipment home with them so they can share individual stories about their own lives at home, at work, and how they are working toward the dream that brought them to the United States. They will be able to interview their families or roomates, their colleagues, and their peers. They can then print screenshots of their work to use for storyboards, which are important to the professional filmmaking process. Most of my students lack access to resources to buy film-worthy cameras and rarely can they invest in printing services to create storyboards for our documentary film project. This camera and printer will give students the opportunity to use real photo/video equipment that will match the quality of the equipment that the outside film crew is using. They will be able to create a professional video to be entered into film festivals both locally in NYC as well as on national and international platforms.
