There is a hallway in our school devoid of any decorations! It just so happens to be right next to the counseling office, and it is screaming out to be used as a sensory hallway. I am the lone school counselor providing service for all 700 of our students from Pre-K to 5th. Students from every grade level will benefit from this project because learning how to self regulate emotions is a lifelong skill that needs to be taught. A sensory path/hallway will allow my students to have a safe outlet for their excess energy so they can return to their work with renewed focus. Students that struggle with managing their emotions can use the sensory path as a tool to regulate their emotions and deescalate strong emotional responses in safe, healthy manner. Since the beginning of the worldwide pandemic, I have observed a great increase in anxiety in our children. This sensory path will help our students feel safer and more in control of their educational environment. Students will be hopping, jumping, spinning, and twirling themselves into a state of calm and focus as they follow the arrows, feet, and velcro strips through a path of sensory adventure. The lights and sensory materials will be mounted on the wall, offering students a designated space to swipe, press, poke, and squish away their stress and anxiety. When children are able to regulate their emotions and have a positive outlet for big emotions and distractions, they are then able to focus on the most important task of learning!
