In my role as a school counselor, I work with students on various social-emotional skills including emotion regulation, anxiety management, and building positive peer relationships. Since returning to in-person learning, many of my students struggle to stay engaged in class. Having access to fidget and sensory tools can benefit students by giving them strategies to stay focused and remain in class so that their learning is not further interrupted. In addition, students' anxiety has risen significantly since we have returned to school and having access to sensory tools can be very helpful in helping students manage their anxiety while at school.
By donating to our project, you will not only be supporting students' in the classroom, but you will also be providing them with access to social-emotional focused books that represent our diverse school community. Another major part of my role is helping students develop the skills required to work with others in various settings, especially those that are different than them. In counseling, I utilize books to help teach many of these skills. Our current selection of books does not represent our diverse student body. Therefore, this project also includes books on topics such as celebrating differences, family structures, self-confidence, and kindness that depict people of various races, ethnicities, ages, and abilities.
My goal is that through the use of fidget tools and books, I will be able to support students in transitioning back to in-person learning, developing age-appropriate social-emotional skills, building positive relationships, and feeling safe and represented at school.
