Preschool children begin to create their identity as they interact with learning materials and play with others. Our children come from very diverse backgrounds and need to see themselves in their dolls, toys, books, and visuals. This project would provide multi-ethnic dolls and toys to use in dramatic play areas in multiple classrooms in my building. By seeing themselves in the dolls and toys they can choose to play with, children will be more connected to the learning time and engage with peers in more positive and prosocial ways. When preschool-aged children see themselves in their classroom, they develop a stronger sense of self and feel that they belong.
