My goal is to help my students learn the skills they'll need to successfully transition to life after high school, including functional literacy and math (using reading, writing, and math in everyday life situations), interpersonal communication and social skills (which often don't come easily to students with autism), and life skills, such as shopping, cooking, and taking care of themselves and their homes. I'm hoping to maximize life skills opportunities in the classroom by building our own class kitchen. Because of pandemic restrictions, I'm not allowed to take students on trips into the community this year, so the more we can do in the classroom, the better. In addition, many of my students have sensory sensitivities and auditory processing challenges. Wiggle cushions, fidget toys, adaptive paper, and lots of colored ink and laminating sheets for visual schedules and learning tools will help to make education more accessible to them. Your donation will have an impact beyond my classroom. My high school has six autistic support classes, plus a number of other special education classes, and we teachers share resources all the time. So, your donation will benefit not only the students in my class, but students in the other special education classes as well.
