Sensory problems are real! To meet College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards of Speaking and Listening (adapt speech to a variety of contexts and communicative tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate) as well as Language (apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening), students with disabilities must first feel comfortable in their learning environment. Bean bag chairs and the comfort of a plush, life-sized bear promote the opportunity for self-soothing to alleviate anxiety brought on when asked to complete academic tasks. Many word based tasks are processed in visual areas of the brain. Developmental relationship-based approaches are systematic approaches to teaching students with autism and Asperger's syndrome. Research suggests individual development and learning are complex dynamic processes that take place within a social context. Kinetic sand and educational play rugs help students with learning differences to communicate, regulate emotions, and establish a foundation for complex thinking and increasingly complex social interaction.
