Enhancing a Child's Learning Through Play
Funded Jan 2, 2024Thank you so much for allowing this project to be funded. My students have been able to learn and grow through play from the items that were purchased through this project. Having great quality items will allow for the early childhood program to use them year after year. Switching out our dramatic play units every three weeks takes a lot of supplies and items to go with that theme. These items helped fulfil holes in several themes for our classrooms.
When the students have these learning toys and manipulatives they have a better real life understanding of how things work. They are allowed to manipulate and play as they learn. Again I would just like to say on behalf of our early childhood program thank you for making this possible for our students and future students.”

Reading is Magical
Funded Oct 11, 2021The students have been enjoying reading their first ever chapter book! Thank you for giving this opportunity to my class. They learn to listen, follow along and use their imagination when reading. They also learn to locate chapters by using the Table of Contents. This is a valuable, life-long skill.
Reading looks like engagement in my class. It sounds like talking. First graders read aloud and love trying the new words and names of the dinosaurs in this book. This book is perfect for first grade because it uses the phonics skills I have recently taught, like the various sounds of -ed (/t/, /d/, and /ed/). It also has a lot of conversation to help students learn to identify who is talking when they see the quotation marks.
Another practice I use is allowing different teacher aids to help read the book aloud to the class. It engages people of all ages!
We are excited to read all four books in this mini-series!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Nevada Department of Education. What Freedom Means to Me
Funded Dec 16, 2021I wrote this project to help students understand the reason why we have a day off of school in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is more than a day off of school. It is named after a person who is meant to be remembered.
The students did not know about the need for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to give his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. I used the books to teach about the context of America. Students learned about the history and the problem of racism that Dr. King addressed.
After we read the speech, students found quotes they liked. Then students wrote about what that quote means to them. This assignment also included lessons on writing and figurative language. I also expected the students to write an anecdote about their lives and apply the quote to themselves. In order to write the speech, they had to read about Dr. King and his life. The books help students do that!
I hope to use these books and expand the speech writing to more students each year. They enjoy having tangible books to read at their own speed. It is much better than relying on the internet. Thank you for the physical books.”
