My students need nonfiction and fiction texts to support their independent reading. These students only need that one experience with a good book to change their perspective forever! It never fails. They walk into their 9th grade English class, and they become afraid when I tell them we will be choosing and reading books independently. They need to pick books that no one is making them read. With this library of options, many of my students will break through this fear and have the first rewarding reading experience of their lives. They can discover in these fiction and nonfiction titles the same excitement usually reserved for TV, movies, and video games. We are teaching them more than grammar and vocabulary; we are teaching them how to use their imagination and fall in love with a story. This will change them forever. These students have everything in them to become the future leaders of this country and this world, but they need our help to get there. I believe becoming a life-long reader is vital in ensuring the cognitive and social success of my students. We must dispel this myth of dusty old books full of foreign facts and figures and place into their hands the seeds that will germinate into a true love of literature.
