Our theme for this year is changemakers. This can mean so many different things, even to us as adults. Changemakers can be those who are taking big steps for social justice. It can mean those who go to work every day to make some type of positive impact, such as doctors and firefighters. It can even be those that are looking to make even one person’s day a little bit brighter. For my students, I want them to believe that they are already changemakers and that they have not only the skills, but the respect and empathy to build the world that they deserve. This classroom rug will be a pivotal part of our school day, every day. We will use this rug first thing in the morning for our "morning meetings." This is when we all sit in a community circle on the floor and talk about our thoughts and feelings. Sometimes this is prompted by the teacher. Other times it will be centered around current events or community news that is pertinent to the students and their lives. We will also use this rug for our daily read out loud time. We sit in our community circle and read a story together, where we ask critical thinking questions and have a positive discussion with one another. Then we move to centers, where the kids rotate in groups between their own desks for independent work, while one group of the kids sits on me with the rug for one-on-one attention. We are learning everyday about taking care of the Earth and the differences we can make. This rug's design perfectly aligns with those objectives. The people in the middle represent our working together. The symbols along the edge talk about the global responsibility we have.
