  • Our School Water Wonderland

    Funded Jul 22, 2022

The water wonderland has been one of the most impactful additions to our classroom this school year. When the students first saw the giant cardboard box at the beginning of the school year, they spent days trying to figure out what was inside. We played guessing games that were an awesome entry way into us getting to know each other. At the end of the first week, we removed the box together and I cannot describe how much joy entered the classroom instantly!

Since then, we have been using the fish tank every day as the entry way into our science unit. The students named the fish and take turns getting to care for them. We have gradually been new breeds of fish into the tank and incorporating a class storyline which serves as a writing kickoff for some of our students. The kids love the sound of the tank and getting to nestle next to it when they are reading independently.

Me and the Room 5 Heroes are all so thankful for bringing this water wonderland into our safe space and we appreciate you dearly.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Yousufzai

  • We Are Changemakers

    Funded Sep 16, 2021

It took 12 hours. And we did it. The kids will receive their changemakers rug.

And it's all because of you. Your selflessness. Your belief that the future generation is bright. Your faith that these students in Room 5 (and the future students who will enjoy it) will put so much positivity in this world.

Some people donated 1 dollar. Some donated more. And all I can do is thank you from the bottom of my heart. You all made a huge difference today.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Yousufzai

Our theme for this year is changemakers. This can mean so many different things, even to us as adults. Changemakers can be those who are taking big steps for social justice. It can mean those who go to work every day to make some type of positive impact, such as doctors and firefighters. It can even be those that are looking to make even one person’s day a little bit brighter. For my students, I want them to believe that they are already changemakers and that they have not only the skills, but the respect and empathy to build the world that they deserve. This classroom rug will be a pivotal part of our school day, every day. We will use this rug first thing in the morning for our "morning meetings." This is when we all sit in a community circle on the floor and talk about our thoughts and feelings. Sometimes this is prompted by the teacher. Other times it will be centered around current events or community news that is pertinent to the students and their lives. We will also use this rug for our daily read out loud time. We sit in our community circle and read a story together, where we ask critical thinking questions and have a positive discussion with one another. Then we move to centers, where the kids rotate in groups between their own desks for independent work, while one group of the kids sits on me with the rug for one-on-one attention. We are learning everyday about taking care of the Earth and the differences we can make. This rug's design perfectly aligns with those objectives. The people in the middle represent our working together. The symbols along the edge talk about the global responsibility we have.
