I want to create a classroom where I provide my students access to new tools and activities, but also hands on experiences that show them what science is truly about! I want students to come into my class with open minds and create lasting connections with STEM. With my school being a Title I school, the resources my students need in our classroom cannot be fulfilled by the current budget, resulting in my students not having access to tools and experiences that other students in surrounding towns have.
This is the first time my 6th grade students have a real science class and are back full-time in person at school in a long time. One of my goals as a first year science teacher is to create a classroom full of wonder and excitement. When we learn about weather, natural hazards, and rock cycling, I want to give my students the opportunity to create and examine cyclones, tornadoes, and erupting volcanoes. I also want to make my students feel like true archaeologists by excavating rocks, fossils and gemstones!
The earth science kits will give my students the thrill of doing more than 15 types of experiments, which will allow students to see all the amazing natural phenomenas that we have learned about up close and personal through the safety of our labs! This kit along with the fossil and gemstone kits will allow students to take a little memory home with them. The pencils and pencil sharpeners will allow the students to keep writing all their bright ideas and observations they have seen through these amazing experiments.
In addition, the Rock Tumbler will give my students the opportunity to really make their rocks and gemstones shine and sparkle like their bright personalities!
