Many students dislike reading because teachers assign “classic” novels that do not reflect the student’s own lives or circumstances. Part of the joy of reading is entering a world that is accessible but new. I have thought a lot about the sorts of books I would like to showcase to my students to help them find a lifelong love of reading. I would love to have a classroom library of diverse, contemporary novels to share with my students. There is nothing like bonding with a student over a book we both love! When a student borrows a book from my classroom collection and returns to talk about it with me, it is pure joy! I love recommending books I think they will like. Unfortunately, my collection is rather small. The book titles I’ve selected are a blend of authors of color, different cultures, memoirs, LGBTQ topics, graphic novels, etc. with the goal of increasing my students’ understanding and acceptance of human differences, as well as finding voices that may reflect their own. There is a place for the “classics,” but also a need for new stories and ideas.
