I believe that students are given the opportunity to see themselves and their culture being represented inside of the classroom. Diversity in the classroom can open student's minds to all the world has to offer and what better way to do that is by introducing books that represent them. As teachers we teach students from all across the continent; they do not only bring their cultures and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnicities, talents and skills. Adding these books to our classroom with empower our students have color. Seeing someone like yourself can strengthen our mindset and pave the way for successful outcomes.
For example I can use the book “ Your Name is a Song”
to teach my students about the importance of pronouncing one's name correctly. I will have each student pronounce their own names while other students repeat the name back. We can sing their names! We can have open discussion on the origins of our name and the symbolism. After that we can write poems about students' names, celebrating the importance of our names!
