I've been working at this school for over seven years now, but this is my first year as a librarian. As I've worked to create a nurturing and safe culture here in the library, I've noticed that, while the books I'm able to provide have done a lot to inspire students, I haven't been able to offer my students all the library services that I think they need, and I want to start changing that. I've put on activities, offered a few new resources, rethought some of the arrangements, and added more welcoming decor. It's helped a lot, but there are other services I want to offer my students that I just can't accomplish alone, and the first of those is starting a Library of Things. A Library of Things is a collection of items that libraries make available to patrons based on the needs of the community. Many public libraries have begun maintaining a library of things, loaning out tools like C-pens and telescopes, which allow their patrons to participate in activities that they wouldn't otherwise be able to. During my time as the librarian, I've seen a major need for more tactile and hands-on learning experiences among the student population, and a Library of Things would be the perfect way to fill that need. With your support, I'll be able to start a brand new Library of Things at my school that I hope to grow and expand in the coming years. The materials I've chosen to start with are a set of Raspberry Pi kits so that students can try out their computing projects, the materials needed for birdwatching kits to encourage students to get outdoors and observe nature, and some ukulele starter sets for budding musicians, especially the ones involved in the school's ukulele club!
