I've been using these books for two years now, and I just wanted to post a quick update: WE LOVE THEM!! I've integrated the books into our social-emotional curriculum, as well as math, science, and social studies. They've been touchpoints for age appropriate development for a wide range of topics such as bullying, body image, identity, diversity, and emotional regulation and management. I've also utilized the STEM library to flesh out concepts related to numbers and operations, measurement, data, fractions, and more! The best thing about this project was that the impact is long-lasting... I still go back to these books over two years later, and will continue to use them in the future.

Storytelling is a developmentally appropriate — and highly engaging — method of teaching third grade math, science, and social studies. Stories can help students make deep cognitive, social, and emotional connections to their learning while developing higher-order thinking skills. The aim of this project is to build a classroom library full of rich, inspiring, and interesting STEM and social studies texts that I can use to complement our everyday curriculum. It's also important that students have access to diverse stories and characters. The books I've chosen reflect my desire to provide my students with a range of narratives and perspectives.
