Empowering Eager Kids: They Want To Grow
Funded Sep 6, 2021I want to begin by giving you my deepest gratitude for helping our classroom obtain resources we use almost daily. We received so many wonderful tools that have helped students develop reading skills and grasp math concepts. When students first saw the phonics flip books, most were very eager to read them. One particular student, however, didn't seem thrilled. Anytime I would give a phonics lesson, he would look down and fidget. With time, I learned that this student was extremely embarrassed about his struggle to read. It took a lot of pep talks and phonological awareness practice to get him to a point where he realized he could break words apart and decode them. Oh, the look on his face when he was able to decode those little phonics flip books! It was priceless. Now he genuinely gets excited to practice his reading skills.
In addition, one of the other items we received was a magnetic place value board for helping students add or subtract up to three-digit numbers. Oh, that board has been an absolute necessity for my math intervention groups. Many of my kids struggled with the concept of regrouping at the beginning of the year, so providing them with concrete tools that help them understand the need to exchange 10 ones for 1 ten or 10 tens for 1 hundred to add (and vice versa to subtract) has been an enormous help!!! I have one student that has trouble retaining information, so allowing her to use the magnetic board has really helped her solve math problems on her own. Plus, students just find the board fun to use.
So, the resources you helped provide have proven invaluable in building foundational skills and knowledge in students who began the year severely behind grade level. These children are headed in the right direction and most definitely growing! Thank you for helping to make that possible!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Herrera
