Many of the students on my caseload are working on learning how to regulate their bodies. When their bodies are disregulated, it is difficult for them to learn and often leads to off-task behavior. Being able to regulate with tools will allow them to stay in the classroom and hear the lesson that is being taught. This will lead to greater learning as they will be able to get the taught information the first time around instead of having to wait until later to get the lesson re-taught when there is time to do so. Some tools will be kept in the special education classroom so when students do need a break outside of their traditional classroom, they have other tools to use to assist in gaining regulation back. This will allow students to take a quick five to ten minute break and then get right back into their general education classrooms, which is the least restrictive environment where the most learning occurs at grade level. A regulated body leads to better outcomes for the child, peers within the same classroom as they can continue to learn, and the teacher as they can continue to teach the lesson. Rugs and lamps will allow me to provide students with a comfortable learning environment is so important. With everything going on this year in regards to social distancing and additional safety protocols with physical materials, having a learning environment where students feel safe and can maintain regulation is even more important. When students feel good in their surroundings, they will learn best. Having a pleasant spot to sit within the physical classroom will help me to create this optimal learning environment for my students.
