Literacy-Based Intervention for Speech and Language Therapy!

Funded Sep 5, 2021

Thank you all so much for your generous donations to my very first project on Donors Choose: Literacy-Based Intervention for Speech language Therapy! Not only have the materials made an impact on targeting the students' speech and language goals, but have also increased their engagement in sessions altogether.

To say that my students were surprised by the influx of materials is an understatement. They opted to go through the Nonfiction Reading Comprehension Practice Cards themselves to select which story would be of interest to them for the day. It was also convenient how a lot of the stories also reinforced what they were learning about in the classroom (e.g., a "Planets" passage to align with the discussions for 8th grade science). Other stories also tied into current issues (i.e., cellphone use).

The students also demonstrated a particular interest in the Scope- Courage and Resilience magazines (pictured). The fact that it was student-friendly and contained thought-provoking and conversation-sparking topics made it that much more appealing. Students not only took away the underlying skills worked on in our speech and language sessions- but were also able to take away a great message from the articles themselves.

The next step for my speech and language students is to start a project, for the next school year, with the goal to acquire student planners for each and every one of them. Not only will it allow them to stay organized for academic purposes, but to also learn about organization and time management as essential life skills.

Once again- I would like to thank you all for your generosity and support in funding this project. Be on the lookout for the next one for student planners! (in preparation for the 2022-2023 school year).”

With gratitude,

Ms. Aziz
