These books will be used to ensure equitable access to books for all students. As an ELL teacher, I see students every day with a desire to learn and grow, but who are unable to reach their full potential because they aren't yet able to read books that interest and excite them in English. In addition, they can't collaborate with their grade-level peers in book discussions and book groups because grade-level texts in English are too difficult. I want to create a Spanish language library full of engaging books for elementary students. I want my students to appreciate their heritage language and maintain the literacy skills they bring when they join our school. Linguistic research shows that literacy skills transfer between languages. No matter what language students are reading in, they are growing as readers, gaining skills, and discovering the joy of reading.
