Windows provide a look outside while mirrors reflect what we see. My students need to see themselves reflected in stories like mirrors, but importantly, they need windows. My students need to learn from the windows of an amazingly diverse and colorful world out there. "Reading is a conversation- All books talk- But a good book listens as well." Learning from others' experiences provides critical thinking opportunities as well as empathy-building moments. Many of my students will be able to learn from the important window stories, but even more importantly, a very specific group of my students will see themselves reflected. These mirrors can provide empowering and profound experiences for my students to see themselves reflected in literature. Their stories are given a voice. A stage. I would love nothing more than to give my students these windows and mirrors that will most definitely change their lives for the better.
