  • Calm Corner Expansion

    Funded May 10, 2022

I would like to thank you all again for your donations. The donations made it possible to expand the Calm Corner at Pine Forest High School a reality. We were able to replenish the supplies we had while also adding new options to help students calm themselves when angry. In the short amount of days that we have had the new supplies, we have already touched many students by helping them cope with stressful situations. The added supplies have also made the Calm Corner more intriguing to other educational professionals. I have been contacted several times about helping them set up Calm Corners and also helping them get started with Donors Choose. With this newfound interest in my project and how I was able to secure funding, I can see projects like this impacting several schools in the future. The most important impact is still helping the students at Pine Forest High School, which I think we have done with the support from you. Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Harris

  • Preparing Students for The Real World.

    Funded Mar 13, 2022

Thank you for your unwavering support of the projects I am implementing in my class. The acquisition of workbooks for financial literacy, coping skills, and anger management have already benefitted my students in the best possible ways. Students have been begging for more information on financial literacy and ways to better cope with the stressors of everyday life. I am glad to say that with your help, I have been able to give them what they are requesting. The printer also makes it easier to provide the students with the necessary handouts. My students and I owe it all to you and your kindness. Thank You”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Harris

  • Anger Management Tools

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

I want to thank all of you for helping me get the resources needed to expand on my calm corner and provide the students with anger management resources to help them when they are upset or have high anxiety levels. My students have taken advantage of the resources and have learned different ways to manage their feelings. Emotional outbursts have decreased, and they have been easier to talk to when implementing the resources such as the anger management game and anger management coloring books. The resources were a hit with the students when they were first introduced. Some didn't even know they were learning anger management techniques and coping skills when they first started using them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Harris

  • Calm Corner, a Place to Go to Avoid Bad Situations.

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

I would like to say that your contributions have made it possible for Pine Forest High School to create and implement a calm corner in its school. This project that was made possible by you all has made it possible to give our students a place to calm down before they make bad situations worse. Since implementing the calm corner, several verbal altercations between students have been stopped due to having somewhere to go and think about their choices. Students also have been able to walk away from situations with teachers and do the same. Without all of you, this would not have been a possibility.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Harris

Creating a calm corner will give students who are upset or experiencing high levels of anxiety a place to calm themselves before making bad decisions. With our school moving towards restorative justice practices from punitive punishments, alternative methods for handling problematic behavior have to be implemented. The calm corner will be useful in avoiding major incidents by giving the student a place to go to calm down and think about their choices before making an emotionally driven bad behavior. The items requested are all therapeutically suggested to help people calm down. By using these items, a calm, safe, and soothing space will be available for students to come and calm down; it will also be used for a space to conduct peer mediation to aid in conflict resolution. The calm corner will aid in reducing out-of-school and in-school suspension, which results in lost class time.
