Our solution to these struggles? Play. Guided play where our students will get to be creative, problem solve, and cooperate with a group. Where they can use their imagination, be flexible with their thinking, and take risks. Where the process is valued more than the product. And while they hone their abilities to play and the social skills that naturally develop, they grow their confidence and persistence in their academics. Play allows students to develop flexible thinking and risk taking. I think many teachers can easily see how play is a priority in kindergarten where they’re developing so many social skills. But as more standards are required in each grade and the academic gap grows, it’s more difficult to see how to carve out time for play in older grades. My students need guidance in exploration and discovery. They need safe, light-hearted guidance in taking risks, failing, and persevering. The value of imagination, flexibility, and persistence sends a message to our students that it’s necessary to problem solve in all areas of our learning. I’m passionate about creating these opportunities for my second graders, so they have the confidence to try something else, whether it’s in social situations or traditional academics.
