My students have had very limited access to reading material lately, and they use any second they can find to read in class. Books clubs are an engaging way for students to immerse themselves in entertaining texts. Students will read books according to a timeline and have rotating roles each day to reflect on the reading. For example, one student will have the role of Illustrator and must draw a scene from last night's reading. Another will have the role of Editor and will record new words from the reading and research their meaning. Each day, students will meet in their Book Clubs to share their contribution to the discussion. Book Clubs allow students to practice interacting with the text and engaging in collaborative discussions. Teachers have a tendency to be guilty of pushing reading and unintentionally turn reading into a chore. By providing my students with tried and true entertaining texts for their developmental level, I am instead setting them on a path toward a new or continued love of reading. By using Book Clubs to do this, I am encouraging them to interact on a deeper level with reading.
