For my students in Rural Appalachian Kentucky, outside cultures and peoples can be difficult to contextualize sometimes. Our region is 98.5% White, and access to multi-cultural resources and community centers is especially scarce for elementary school students. Through friends and social media posts, I have asked people from all across the United States and beyond to send postcards to my students. Every Friday, we open our class by reading our postcard and learning about the location and culture. Postcard writers send us at least one fact about their location, their favorite thing about their location, and some words of encouragement for Emmalena students. So far, we have received postcards from Taiwan, Lithuania, Saint Barthélemy, and Japan. This week, we even learned about the Bison population of San Francisco, California! My students love learning about new cultures and countries, and I would love for them to have the opportunity to write back to their new friends across the globe. Rooting their writing in the joy of learning and friendship has pushed them tremendously on their spelling, writing, and handwriting—something my students have really struggled with. Your generous contributions would allow us to incorporate a new aspect to our postcard project!
