I plan on using on these items to facilitate social-emotional learning within my school. I believe that social-emotional learning helps students be more self-aware, more able to manage their feelings and thoughts, and more capable of interacting with other people in their lives, whether that is their friends, classmates, teachers, or parents. It can also help improve academic performance. When students develop coping skills, they are able to manage their emotions and concentrate more on classroom tasks. The books/curriculum purchased will be used in classroom lessons and in more specialized groups with specific students or individuals who may benefit from more in-depth conversations. Specifically, I will use the "Little Spot" books to help students be able to identify their emotions and learn about several different strategies for regulating these emotions both inside and outside the classroom. The books by Julia Cook will help target specific behaviors and show students to self-regulate more, which will help with overall classroom behavior, and will improve academics. I also asked for some items to be able to give students to take home to give them additional outlets to regulate their feelings and emotions when I'm not with them. Students have found the journals to be a great resource and will often write back and forth with me. I also asked for some "fidget" toys to keep in my office. I have found that when students are able to play with these fidgets, they are more likely to relax and open up with me in my office.
