All of these materials will help implement unique social-emotional learning through a variety of a ways. My students will benefit from these items in a multitude of ways. The books chosen, some in English, some in Spanish, will help my students of all backgrounds to have a better understanding of important SEL skills such as empathy, respect, honesty, integrity, and so on. I picked many different items such as tangibles, board games, and some incentives to help keep my students motivated and engaged.
Our students are diverse, coming from all different backgrounds, ethnicities, socio-economic levels, and belief systems. This past year, people were very divided, and many hard, heavy, and emotionally tolling events have occurred. Along with building resilience, my goal this year is to help foster a greater sense of togetherness in every student, K-5, regardless of who they are or where they come from.
One of the parts of this project that I am most excited for is my Kindness Rocks. The rocks on my donation list will be used in each grade, and will help supplement a lesson on community and kindness that I will give later in the year. Our community is very close and small. The children will have the opportunity to paint a rock in class with a beautiful picture, a positive saying, or however they would like to express themselves. Then, the children will be asked to hide their rocks around the neighborhood for the next week. With over 200 students, our community will be filled with beautiful, bright, positivity stones. Families can then look forward to finding these stones on their walks or while just out in the community.
