Our After-School Program targets students with the highest needs based on ability, academic needs (such as an opportunity for emergent bilinguals to practice reading in English), and socio-economic challenges (including students in the foster system). It is a safe place for students to stay in school and off the streets. In providing them with books that they can keep, you'll be helping to develop deeper literacy engagement and nurture a true relationship with books. Like Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, putting books in homes will impact students lives beyond our school room by making literacy and books a part of every household. This particular book is an immigrant story-- something many of my students will be able to relate to. As we read Jasmine Warga's prose, we'll examine identify, privilege, rites of passage and the ingredients of belonging. Like many of my students, the main character will be having to learn English as a second language, making this character even more relatable. Thanks for helping us make this dream a reality!
