As a first-year teacher, my classroom library consists of donated books, Goodwill finds, and books that my friends and family were kind enough to purchase. I would love to expand my library to include a more diverse range of titles, topics, and authors.
Having 26 students in my classroom, with varying interests and reading levels, a small classroom library is not effective in meeting their needs. My students only visit our school library about once a week. My goal is to facilitate a classroom library that meets the needs of my students and fills the gaps of visiting the school library.
For homework each night, my students are assigned to read for 30 minutes. After taking a student survey, I found that some of my students do not own books at home. Providing them a library that they are able to borrow books from, provides me with the comfort that my student's needs are being met.
I was privileged enough to have access to a public library, school library, and my own collection of books when I was a student. Reading was such a huge part of my life as a child. I hope that I am able to provide the comfort of books to my students, the way the adults in my young life were able to provide me.
