As a Reading Specialist, I spend a lot of time teaching kids the how of learning to read by giving them the tools to become successful readers. I am always so impressed by my students and how hard they work to break the reading code. But I also always want to remind them why they are working so hard by sharing a love of reading and books with them.
Time and again, I have seen early readers become hooked on reading by Mo Willems and his early readers series, Piggy and Gerald. Kids find these books approachable since they are written in a graphic novel format with all text in speech bubbles. They get lots of practice with reading fluency because the books have many high frequency words and kids like to read them over and over. They are perfect for partner reading, as each partner can read aloud for one of the characters. And they bring so much joy to the room because kids find the illustrations and writing style to be absolutely hilarious.
My plan is to start a Piggy and Gerald book club for my struggling readers in grades 1st-3rd. Students will have an opportunity to come to the reading room once a week to read Piggy and Gerald books with a partner. Once they have read 5 books, they will get to choose one book to take home to start their own personal library. I will keep two of the book sets in the reading room for students to use for partner reading, and send home the rest of the books for students to keep. And of course I will be wearing the t-shirt for Piggy and Gerald book club days!
