The Joy of Reading

Funded Sep 29, 2021

Thank you so much for your donation of books and highlighters to my classroom. Because of you, my students have new and exciting, young adult literature with characters that they can relate to!

Students have read "Under the Blood Red Sun" as a class, and studied story elements such as characters and conflict. We discussed the history of WWII and it's impact on Hawaii and Japan and the people who lived there or had immigrated from there. It opened their eyes to history of the United States that they did not know had occurred. During this time they also used the highlighters to color code their thinking and responses.

In May, we will use "A Long Walk to Water" to learn about life in Africa where clean water and an education go hand in hand, but are both hard to find. The other books are used for silent reading time, where student get to choose what they read. My students were so excited to get these books after not having access to them over the last 18 months of the pandemic. Thank you for giving them the gift of reading!!!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Savage
