Students of color need diverse books because so often they do not see themselves in literature, and therefore feel marginalized, even invisible. With these books, my students will feel identified and motivated to read more. This is especially important with this group of students who are reading below grade level. If they read books where they can see themselves in the characters, they will engage more with the material and relate to the characters' situations. Getting my students to read more is a high priority. With these books, it is my goal to instill of love of reading in my students.
