Technology has been an integral, necessary component of success last school year. We were remotely teaching and learning until March when we moved to a hybrid model. Every student needed their own device to access Google Classroom, programs like Nearpod for interactive learning, Jamboard for collaboration, websites, and more. Some students borrowed school-owned devices, but others shared or borrowed a device. Some students did purchase a device, but many of our families are not in a position to do this. We are expecting to be in person for the 2021-2022 school year. My school wants to shift to 1:1 devices, eliminating the need for students to buy, share, or borrow a device. Not having to worry about purchasing, sharing, or borrowing a device will alleviate financial stress. This will support my students' emotional and mental well-being. If we have enough devices, students would also be able to use devices at home! Providing a device to every student will make their education more equitable. Students will need a device to research, type their papers and create their presentations, and apply their 21st-century skills. Students will use these devices for a variety of activities: interacting with others on Nearpod, learning about financial literacy, developing their STEM skills, accessing diverse digital books to increase their literacy skills, and so much more! Students will be able to access websites like Calm, which would help their mental health by reducing stress.
