The furniture items I am requesting for my classroom will give my students a therapeutic space to retreat to during the school day when they struggle to regulate their emotions in their GenEd classroom settings. The beanbag chairs will give students a safe and comfortable space to de-escalate after an episode in their Gen Ed classes or from a traumatic incident that may have happened at home or with peers. The room divider will separate the other students working in the classroom and create privacy to talk with the qualified mental health therapist and the therapeutic intervention coach as part of the student's services on their IEPs. The floor lamps will provide an ambient alternative for students with high anxiety and sensory needs. The donations for this project will support students in developing a communal space for students to share their experiences during small group circle time and implementing and discussing interventions with students. The students in my classroom have highly traumatic backgrounds and struggle to regulate emotions without a supportive and safe environment. These students show vast improvement in their engagement with the GenEd setting when they have the space to work out conflicting emotions. As a social-emotional support special education teacher, I want to provide a space where students can unwind and de-escalate in a supportive and therapeutic environment.
