Without a school library, and limited class sets, my students are unable to engage in their choice of independent reading, which has been argued by the National Council of Teachers of English to be the most effective for improving reading and writing. I would like to have a more diverse library in my classroom to compensate for this deficiency. Since many teachers have already implemented this strategy in their classrooms, my students look forward to English class for the opportunity to read student-selected texts. Specific benefits my students identified include the opportunity to build comradery and reading comprehension through group and independent reading; funding for this project will give them that chance. The materials listed in this project include novels and notebooks. Jason Reynold's A Long Way Down, paired with other contemporary novels, addresses education standards and develops key critical thinking and social skills. As stated by Rudine Sims Bishop in 1990, the practice of selecting and reading a contemporary novel can "affirm students' own experiences of a world they potentially feel very isolated in." The notebooks are instructional materials to track and develop intellectual growth.
