When I open my classroom door this new school year, I will be welcoming young learners with a variety of experiences, strengths, and challenges. For some of my students, this will be their first time in school. Others will be returning back to in-person learning. I want to provide a safe, nurturing, and supportive classroom environment to all my students. I want to provide opportunities that are fun and interactive for my students.
My classroom needs supplies that will build my students’ fine motor skills. I want to encourage my students to participate in fine motor activities by providing work bins that will contain different activities to help them develop fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are essential for performing everyday activities for self-care and academic tasks. My students often struggle when using scissors and other classroom tools. They experience difficulties with object manipulation tasks such as using buttons, feeding themselves, grasping toys, buttoning and zipping up clothes, writing, drawing, tying shoelaces, cutting, tracing, etc.
These supplies will be utilized by 8 students who are eager to engage in learning and have fun while learning. Some of the fine motor boxes will be built around these activities: cutting strips, pattern blocks, hole poking, tracing paths, hole punching, cutting lines/shapes, tracing, beadwork, scissor snipping, dough work, pre-writing, stick mats, etc.
Researchers emphasize that developing fine motor skills in early childhood education helps to build a foundation for important future skills like writing and self-care. These fine motor activities will target the development of fine motor skills in my students and increase their self-esteem and confidence.
