All of my autistic students are eager to get out on their own when the day comes. But in order to make a healthy transition to adulthood, they must first develop certain basic living skills. Currently, my students only look at pictures, videos, and and other visual activities to grasp the concept learning routine daily living skills.
For the autism Daily Living Class, I am requesting a love seat, area rug, end tables, coffee table, a bed and mattress which will offer an opportunity to provide real-life and hands on experiences to be implemented by practicing those daily living skills that can build skills for every day living. Students with disabilities need to feel connected to community life. Therefore, as they progress, they will build independence through those daily routines in everyday life.
My students are visibly more engaged in learning when they are given a chance to participate in activities that are hands-on and repetitious experiencing a sense of connection to real life situations.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them an opportunity to experience real life daily living skills and stimulate more communication within the classroom. The love seat, area rug, end tables, coffee table, a bed and mattress will allow for a real life setting home look and for students to perform daily tasks that exist in their lives to develop into active and productive members of their communities. These products will also be beneficial by providing life skills that are an important function of preparing autistic students in taking action in situations where adults may not be around to help.
I have seen how repetition and real life scenarios of activities can positively affect my students' production and student outcome resulting in helping them grow and being prepared for independent living.
