Physical Education has taken a turn from the traditional aspect of dodgeball and kickball and is moving towards more inclusive-style games for all ages. I want to conduct a backyard games unit because these are games that students of all ages and abilities can participate in. Backyard games are casual that incorporate the skills of underhand throwing and precision. Which are two skills I teach throughout the year. They are games most everyone loves to play as well as games we use in end-of-the-year activities for the grades moving onto the next school in our district. Backyard games do not only teach the skill of underhand throwing but also brings in the aspect of mental math where students have to add and subtract scores in their head. I try to use cross-curricular activities in my physical education classes to help students reinforce what they are learning in the classroom as well. With these items, I can start to introduce new style games to my students along with the traditional physical education activities such as soccer, floor hockey, etc. It would be a great unit for students who may sometimes get frustrated who sometimes get frustrated playing team sports because they never get passes the ball, or they are afraid they will mess up for their team. I hope these backyard games will build confidence and have the students who do not like coming to physical education more enjoyable for them.
