Have you ever been so full of emotion that you thought you were going to explode? Even as adults, we all struggle to manage our feelings sometimes. My students are little people with big feelings, and they are in the process of learning how to manage those feelings in positive and productive ways.
These resources will create a safe space in my classroom for students to sort through, articulate, and manage their feelings. We often take this process for granted, but it is something that needs to be intentionally taught and supported by our students. With your support, I will be able to do so!
My students have diverse needs, many of which involve communication challenges or delays. When they are flooded with negative emotions, such as frustration or disappointment, they frequently do not have the skills to deescalate safety. This causes them to break down, throw a tantrum, hurt themselves or others, and ultimately miss out on valuable instructional time. This Calming Corner will provide my students with a physically safe space where they can go when they are feeling overwhelmed with emotion. They will have cushions to squeeze or punch and a ball to wiggle on, releasing their physical energy. They will have fidget toys to help them clear their mind as they calm themselves. Lastly, they will have board games that I can play with them, helping to refocus their energy while building a trusting relationship.
My ultimate goal is to help them reach their social and academic goals. Having the resources to help them properly address their disruptive emotions in a healthy manner will increase our productivity and progress!
