Students that can read feel confident and know that the world is open to them to learn whatever they want. They will no longer feel at a disadvantage because of the lack of exposure they received due to COVID. The tools I have requested will be used in whole class instruction during our ELA block as students are learning phonemic awareness and phonics. They are also critical for small group instruction with students that struggle to read. This will provide a multi-sensory way to enable students to manipulate the sounds in words with magnetic wands, linking cubes and other hands on materials. Research in the science of reading has shown that this kind of hands-on work with letters and sounds will help make connections in the brain that can transfer to representing sounds with letters. Students that can successfully read and write feel powerful. My goal is to help students hear the sounds in language so that they can manipulate them. This will lead to being able to represent those sounds with letter symbols, which then leads to being able to blend those sounds into words. When students feel confident in their abilities to decode words, they feel powerful. That feeling extends into all areas of their life. They become eager to learn as much as they can and know that they can make a difference regardless of what challenges the pandemic may bring their way. I love seeing the light bulbs click on. Decodable books are essential to building confident readers because they can quickly practice the decoding skills we learn in class. They no longer have to guess or feel frustrated when they don't know the words.
